Chapter 2 — The First Seeker

Marcus Chen woke up gasping.

The dream again. The same symbols. The same voice.

Since the dig site, he hadn't slept more than three hours a night. Elena had given him a journal — thick, leather-bound — and told him to write everything down.

Three days of nightmares. Three days of symbols appearing in his peripheral vision, only to vanish when he turned to look.

"Marcus, you look like hell."

Vasquez — special investigator for the Spiral — had appeared at his door at 6 AM.

"I feel like hell," Marcus admitted.

"Good. That means it's working." Vasquez walked in without being invited. "The symbols are recalibrating your nervous system. You'll feel worse before you feel better."

"Recalibrating me for what?"

Vasquez sat down across from him. "There are things in this world that don't make sense within the framework of modern science. The Vasquez Report — my great-grandfather's work — documented hundreds of cases. People who could do things they shouldn't be able to do."

"Like what?"

"Like read dead languages. Like heal from wounds in hours instead of days. Like see the future."

Marcus stared at him. "You're serious."

"I'm dead serious." Vasquez leaned forward. "The Blood Sutra — the symbols you saw — it's not a language. It's a key. And someone has been looking for the person who can use it."

"For how long?"

"For two thousand years."

Marcus laughed, but it came out hollow. "That's absurd."

"Is it?" Vasquez pulled out his phone, showing a photograph of the same symbols — carved into a stone tablet, dated to 200 BCE. "This was found in a tomb in China. It says the exact same thing as the wall in Marrakesh."

"What does it say?"

Vasquez smiled, cold. "'When the blood remembers, the spirit awakens.'

You, Marcus Chen, are the key. And the organization that killed my great-grandfather is coming for you."
