Chapter 1 — The Lost Script

The glow did not fade.

Elena pulled her hand back, but the symbols continued to pulse — a soft, amber light that moved through the stone like blood through veins.

"Marcus," she said, her voice steadier than she felt. "Come down here. Bring the camera."

The climb took him thirty seconds. When he reached the bottom, his face went pale.

"What the hell is that?"

"I don't know yet." Elena circled the chamber, her eyes tracking the symbols in the order they appeared. "But I've seen something like this before."

"Where?"

"The Vasquez Lab reports. 1998. They found similar markings in a dig site outside Marrakesh. The team called them 'the breathing script' — because they never stopped moving."

She knelt down, running her fingers over the symbols. They were warm. Almost alive.

"This is it," she whispered. "This is what I've been looking for my entire career."

Marcus swallowed. "Elena, I can read them."

She turned, sharp. "What?"

"I don't know how. I don't know why. But when I look at them..." He shook his head. "They say 'The path is not walked. It is remembered.'"

The symbols flared.

Elena's equipment went dead. The lights above them flickered. And somewhere deep beneath the earth, something that had been sleeping for a very long time began to stir.

"How long?" she asked quietly.

"How long what?"

"How long have you been able to read them?"

Marcus looked at his hands. "Since I was twelve. I thought it was my imagination." He laughed, hollow. "I used to draw them in my notebooks. Teachers said I had a 'vivid imagination.'"

"The symbols didn't choose you, Marcus," Elena said slowly. "They marked you. And if I'm right, you're not the only one."

The chamber trembled. Dust fell from the ceiling.

"We need to leave," she said.

But Marcus didn't move. His eyes were fixed on the wall — on the symbols that now formed a single, coherent sentence.

"What does it say?" Elena asked.

He turned to her, and for the first time since she'd known him, there was fear in his eyes.

"It says: 'The first has arrived. The others must be found.'"
