Wind Position Rules for Four-Player Mahjong

Wind positions are a core part of four-player mahjong. This traditional Chinese folk social entertainment game uses four wind seats: East, South, West, and North. Each wind has meaning for seating, turn order, and scoring. Understanding wind rules helps families play a fair and enjoyable game.

Tile Knowledge

The mahjong set includes 16 wind tiles. Each wind has four copies.

The four winds:
- East Wind: Symbol of spring and beginnings.
- South Wind: Symbol of summer.
- West Wind: Symbol of autumn.
- North Wind: Symbol of winter.

Wind tiles are honor tiles. They cannot form sequences. They can only form triplets or pairs. A triplet of wind tiles scores bonus points in most family rules.

Wind tiles also appear on the table as seat markers. The dealer keeps the East Wind marker. This marker rotates as the game continues.

You do not need wind tiles to win. But having wind tiles in your hand can increase your score. Many families assign extra points for matching your seat wind.

Game Steps

Wind positions affect every step of the game.

Step 1 — Determine seating.
Each player draws a wind tile randomly from the table. The player who draws East becomes the dealer. The other players sit in order: South to the right of East, West across, and North to the left.

Step 2 — Set the round.
The first round is always the East round. Each round includes up to four hands. After each hand, the East position may rotate.

Step 3 — Play the hand.
East deals first. Play moves counterclockwise. Each player draws and discards in turn. The wind seats do not change during a single hand.

Step 4 — Check for winning.
The winning player shows their hand. If East wins, they keep the dealer position. If another player wins, the East position passes to the next player clockwise.

Step 5 — Start a new hand.
Tiles are reshuffled. A new wall is built. If the East position changed, a new marker is placed. Play continues until the round ends or the agreed number of hands is done.

Step 6 — End of round.
After four hands, or when East loses three times, the East round ends. Some families move to the South round after completing the East round.

Valid Hand Combinations

Wind tiles can be part of any winning hand.

Standard four-group-plus-pair structure:
- Three wind tiles as a triplet count as one group.
- Two wind tiles as a pair count as the required pair.

Common wind-related hands in family play:
- Seat Wind triplet: Three copies of your own wind. Scores extra points.
- Round Wind triplet: Three copies of the round wind. Also scores extra.
- Double Wind triplet: Triple of your seat wind during your round wind. Scores even more.
- Four Wind hand: Four wind triplets plus a pair of any wind. Very rare in family play.

Because wind tiles are honors, they cannot form sequences. A hand with many wind tiles is harder to complete. Beginners should use wind tiles sparingly.

Important rule for families:
Wind tiles are not required to win. You can win with zero wind tiles in your hand. Do not feel pressured to collect wind tiles every game.

Scoring

Wind position adds layers to family mahjong scoring.

Basic wind scoring:
- Seat Wind triplet: 1 extra point.
- Round Wind triplet: 1 extra point.
- Both Seat and Round Wind triplet: 2 extra points.
- Pair of Seat Wind: No extra points, except in some family rules.

East Wind special rules:
The East player (dealer) scores double in some family rules. This is because East has a slight disadvantage — they deal first and cannot pass the turn. The double scoring balances this.

Scoring rotation:
- If East wins: East stays as dealer. Scores double.
- If South, West, or North wins: East passes. The winning player scores regular points.
- Some families play that East must win to keep the seat. If East does not win, the seat passes.

Point tallying:
After each hand, points are added. The player with the most total points at the end wins. Wind bonuses make the game more interesting without adding complexity.

Game Skills

Skill 1 — Know your seat wind.
Memorize your seat wind at the start. This affects your tile choices. If you draw a wind tile that matches your seat, keep it for a triplet.

Skill 2 — Watch East.
East has scoring advantages. When East is close to winning, play more cautiously. Do not discard tiles that could complete East hand.

Skill 3 — Use wind tiles wisely.
Wind tiles are safe discards early in the game. Other players are unlikely to need them in the first few turns. Late in the game, wind tiles are dangerous because opponents may be holding pairs.

Skill 4 — Track round changes.
When the East round ends and South round begins, the round wind changes. A wind triplet that scored in the East round may not score in the South round. Adjust your strategy.

Skill 5 — Do not hoard wind tiles.
Keeping three different wind tiles is usually a mistake. They do not connect to each other. Discard two of them early and keep only one for a potential pair.

Summary

Wind position rules make four-player mahjong fair and strategic. The four winds determine seating, turn order, and scoring bonuses. East starts as dealer with special scoring advantages. Each player benefits from knowing their seat wind and the round wind. Wind tiles add depth to this traditional Chinese folk social entertainment game. Use them to boost your score, but do not rely on them. Focus on building a solid hand first. Wind bonuses are a reward, not a requirement. With practice, wind position rules become second nature for family game nights.
