The trail led Marcus to a library in Cambridge that had been closed for thirty years.

The books were still on the shelves. Dust caked everything. And in the basement, preserved in a glass case, was a manuscript that predated the Marrakesh symbols by five hundred years.

"The Blood Sutra," Elena read aloud from the curator's notes. "First documented by Nestorian monks in 7th century China. Described as 'the scripture that reads the reader.'"

"It found its way to Europe through the Silk Road," Marcus added, scanning the manuscript. "By the 12th century, it was in the Vatican archives. Then it disappeared in 1527 — during the Sack of Rome."

"Or it was stolen."

"By whom?"

They found the answer in a marginal note, written in Latin: *Custodes Sanguinis* — The Keepers of Blood.

"The Spiral," Elena whispered. "That's their real name. They've been guarding the Blood Sutra for centuries."

"But why?" Marcus asked. "And from whom?"

The manuscript didn't say. But the last page contained a single symbol — one that Marcus hadn't seen before.

When he touched it, the world went white.
